When Life Doesn’t Go According To Plan

This past Sunday, I did what I always do. We finished our worship planning meeting at 8 am, and I headed to the prayer room to pray before services. Every week I do this, it’s part of the plan. Lilye, our Prayer Pastor, and our Prayer Team get together and pray over the day. Today was different. As I walked in, Lilye and her husband Sonny were on their knees praying to God. We had never been on knees praying before. Frankly, I needed to get on my knees and humble myself before the Lord because I had taken the first part of my day to tell God how stupid it was for Him to send snow on one of our biggest outreach days (the Easter Egg Hunt) of the year! ? I was making it all about my plans. Get On Your Knees When Your Plan Isn’t Working So I kneeled along with Lilye and Sonny and began to pray. One by one our Prayer Team came into the room and by the end of our time, every single one of them were on their knees. We were crying out to God and asking for His will to be done! I was so humbled and realized I was so wrong when I told God what I thought about how sending the snow was stupid. At that moment, I was so thankful for our leaders who led me to the right action. Despite the horrible weather outside, it was one of our best days as a church. People worshipped with passion, visitors came and were welcomed, friends encouraged and supported friends, an amazing message was delivered that would inspire many, and we had an incredible baptism. Have you ever thought things weren’t going to work out…and they did…according to God’s plan? Have you ever thought, “If God would just do things the way I have them planned out, this would work a lot better?”…but then realized that you’re not God and you need to stop acting that way. Can you relate? If the answer is yes, be reminded of the scripture below… “IF my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Finding Joy Within The Battles

As you continuously fight life’s battles, it’s important to take time to stop and take care of yourself. This will allow you to have the right mindset, enough energy, and be able to feel God’s love. Taking this time for yourself will allow you to overcome anything. God made you with a body that you can take care of, move, and see the everyday beauty in the world around you. It’s your individual responsibility to embrace that role. There is no one answer for all, but I strongly encourage you to find something that you enjoy to do. My something is working out. It’s not just about trying to look good; It has been a place of healing, praying, worshiping, learning, joy, allowing myself to feel emotions and disappointments along with victory, refocusing on having the right attitude, learning patience, having fun and the list goes on and on. It’s not about where I place or how well I do in any given event/race as a triathlete/runner. It is about transferring what I learned from races to everyday life and continuing to strive for better. In spite of my imperfections, all glory is given to God and what he makes me capable of. While I love working out and the way it makes me feel, my true calling is to help with the Heart for Africa mission. Because of the lessons I learned through racing, I’ve been able to apply valuable principles to my career. My best ideas have been while working out and I’m able to maintain a positive attitude in hard circumstances. What is God calling you to do so that you can better serve Him? Don’t wait for everything to be perfect, because it never will be. The best thing you can do is just start. Whether it’s moving your body to reduce or even eliminate depression and anxiety, heal from your past (like me), lose weight, or grow a closer relationship with Jesus. You can do this in many ways, such as by listening to worship music or praying during your workout, but you have to just take that initial step to get started. Ease into it. Some days you’ll feel like doing it, and some days you won’t. Just keep going and remember how and why you are supposed to move. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV
The Most Terrifying Emotion

“As someone who studies shame and scarcity and fear, if you asked me, ‘What is the most terrifying, difficult emotion we experience as humans?’ I would say joy,” says Dr. Brene Brown. How many of you as parents have ever watched your child sleeping and thought, “I love you like I never imagined possible,” and then in that split second pictured something horrific happening? Or have you ever thought, “Work is going good, holy crap, what is coming? It can be terrifying. Do you know what that is? When we lose our tolerance for vulnerability, joy is foreboding. I’m not going to soften into joy because I’m scared it’s going to be taken away. Most of us try to beat joy to the punch because in the absence of vulnerability-joy is downright terrifying. However, people that choose to live with great joy feel that same shudder of fear, but instead of rehearsing tragedy, they practice gratitude. What does this have to do with Africa? Everything! The presence of God is joy. Project Canaan is the joy in the middle fo Swaziland. How do we describe what it is like there? Poverty. Orphans. Starvation. Rape. HIV. JOY! No one lives in denial that life is hard. And yet, rather than lamenting that there are problems, there is a faith that is pure and joyous, that is strong and evident in a land without distraction. In America, we cannot determine the length of our life, our birth order or our health. In America, there is rape, starvation, and HIV, however, we live with distraction. We live with the greatest distraction of all: control. We deny our vulnerability to death and despair under this false pretense that we can control the outcome of our lives through our work, behavior, and choices. On Project Canaan, no one has a false illusion or distraction that we control our own lives. Only God. God is the supplier, the savior, and the hope. In America, we crave more. We crave more friends, community, wealth, health and beauty because we misunderstand the source of joy. What is Joy? Joy is not the absence of pain and despair. It is the presence of God, acknowledging the beauty in the midst of pain and faith in the ultimate supplier. Joy is gratitude for knowing we have a Savior! Africa’s greatest lesson to our team was JOY and FAITH…more on FAITH later… Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit,if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2 NIV
A Divine Appointment Part 1

I had an appointment that morning. I don’t like to be late, so I was being very careful to finish up what I was working on so I could leave on time. However, I needed to take some time to pray so I went to the prayer room for some privacy. I lifted up many people and many things and then, right before I was finished, I prayed, “God, I know you don’t need me to do anything for you today, but I want to do whatever you would like me to do. If there is someone I encounter today that needs to experience your love, please bring them to my attention. Lord, I know I get busy and distracted. Will you please make sure that I am aware of the person that needs to see you?” Prayer is powerful my friends. God is powerful and there is nothing he cannot do, and He was getting ready to answer my prayer in a surprising and abrupt way! I left the church on time. I had driven about half a mile when a car came flying up behind me and hit me. My appointment was my first thought, “I am going to be late. I hate to be late.” My second thought as I was pulling off to the side of the road was, “I hope they pull over with me and don’t take off. I better check their plate and remember it.” The third thought, as I got out of my car and saw the person that hit me was, “It’s her!” She was talking about a mile a minute, and while she was talking to me I was talking to Jesus. “This is her! Wow, that was fast! Thank you for hearing me, thank you for introducing us, what do you want me to say to her?” The police took about half an hour to get there and half an hour to do paperwork. I had an hour to invest in this soul who was desperately in need of a relationship with Jesus. She was sharing her story with me as we waited on the side of the road with cars driving by. During that hour, she described a life of incredible pain, unimaginably difficult life circumstances. I could see that she was stuck at the point of her pain. For someone stuck fast in quicksand, this accident could have added more weight and pushed her under, but that morning, Jesus had other plans. Jesus saw me and he saw her and changed both our plans into a divine appointment. Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NLT) Read A Divine Appointment Part 2
